The World Cup is coming to Canada in 2026, and Toronto and Vancouver are getting ready to host some of the biggest matches in Canadian soccer history. Stadiums will be full, city cores will be buzzing, and visitors from all over the world will be here to watch Canada and some heavyweight football nations play meaningful games on Canadian soil.
If you’re flying in to follow your team, see Canada’s men finally play a World Cup at home, or just be part of the atmosphere, there’s one thing you should bring with you besides your scarf and flag: Visitor to Canada (VTC) travel insurance. Canada’s healthcare system is excellent, but it is not free for visitors, and even a basic emergency visit can turn into an unpleasant surprise without coverage.
The Games Coming to Toronto
Toronto is hosting six World Cup matches at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field at Exhibition Place), including Canada’s first‑ever men’s World Cup game on home soil on June 12, 2026. The surrounding area at Exhibition Place and along the waterfront will be packed with supporters heading to and from the ground, fan events, and watch parties across the city.
Toronto match schedule:
Fri, June 12: Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina (Group B opener)
Wed, June 17: Ghana vs Panama (Group stage)
Sat, June 20: Germany vs Côte d’Ivoire (Group stage)
Tue, June 23: Panama vs Croatia (Group stage)
Fri, June 26: Senegal vs FIFA Playoff A Winner (Group stage)
Thu, July 2: Round of 32 knockout match (Group K runner‑up vs Group L runner‑up)
On match days, expect big crowds moving between transit, the stadium, local bars, and designated fan areas, plus some road closures and schedule changes, so it pays to plan your route and timing in advance.
The Games Coming to Vancouver
Vancouver’s BC Place will host seven World Cup matches, including two Canada group games and two knockout fixtures. Downtown Vancouver, False Creek, the PNE, and other central locations will feature organized fan events and public viewing areas, with supporters using the SkyTrain, buses, and short walks to move between the stadium, fan experiences, and the rest of the city.
Vancouver match schedule:
Sat, June 13: Group D – Australia vs Türkiye (UEFA Playoff C winner)
Thu, June 18: Group B – Canada vs Qatar
Sun, June 21: Group G – Egypt vs New Zealand
Wed, June 24: Group B – Switzerland vs Canada
Fri, June 26: Group F – New Zealand vs Belgium
Thu, July 2: Round of 32 – Match 85 (teams TBD)
Tue, July 7: Round of 16 – Match 96 (teams TBD)
After games, crowds will spread out into nearby neighbourhoods like Yaletown and Gastown, as well as towards fan festival sites and viewing areas located elsewhere in the city, so visitors can combine match days with exploring Vancouver’s food, nightlife, and waterfront.
Why Visitor to Canada Insurance Matters
With this much walking, travel, weather, and excitement, things can go wrong even if you never kick a ball. Visitor to Canada (VTC) Insurance is designed to help cover unexpected medical expenses if you get sick or injured during your stay, whether that’s a sprain on stadium steps, a bad fall on a wet sidewalk, or an illness that hits mid‑tournament. Instead of worrying about what a hospital bill might look like, you can focus on your team’s lineup and where you’re watching the next match.
Coverage details vary by policy, but many plans include emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, some diagnostic tests, and certain accidental injuries, always within the stated limits and exclusions. Buying before you arrive, choosing a reasonable coverage limit, and understanding your deductible go a long way toward avoiding financial surprises.
No Hooliganism: What the Fine Print Says
Now to the part that doesn’t get printed on scarves: general exclusions. Most travel medical policies clearly exclude claims that arise from excessive alcohol consumption, illegal acts, or deliberately risky behavior. That means if you injure yourself while extremely intoxicated, starting fights, or doing something obviously dangerous, your claim can be denied even if you have a valid policy.
In World Cup terms, if your “celebration” involves climbing structures, rushing the field, or attempting a concrete‑floor acrobatic move after too many drinks, you may find your insurer is not on your team for that one. Enjoy the atmosphere, have a drink if that fits your plans, but treat your surroundings and your body with some respect if you want your coverage to be there when you need it.
Get Covered Before Kickoff
Buying VTC insurance is simple. You can visit bestquotetravelinsurance.ca, enter your trip dates and details, compare Visitor to Canada plans from multiple insurers, and purchase coverage online in a few minutes. The cost is usually small compared to what a single emergency visit could run without insurance, especially during a major international event.
Canada will host Canada vs Bosnia in Toronto, Canada vs Qatar and Canada vs Switzerland in Vancouver, plus major matchups featuring Germany, Belgium, Croatia, Ghana, Senegal, Australia, Türkiye, New Zealand, Egypt, and more. You bring your team colors, your plans for match days in Toronto and Vancouver, and your Visitor to Canada Insurance, and let the tournament take care of the rest.
